Where the working notes carry the marks.

A CA paper is the clearest case in Indian education of marks living in the method rather than the answer. A student who reaches the wrong figure through correct treatment has earned most of the question, and a student who writes the right figure with no working has earned very little.

Why mock test checking breaks down

Everyone teaching CA agrees candidates should write more full-length mocks. In practice a single paper takes an experienced evaluator a long time to mark properly, because marking it properly means following the working line by line. So mocks get set less often than they should, or get returned a fortnight later when the candidate has moved on.

What gets marked

• Working notes, step by step. Each step of a computation is read and credited on its own, the way the suggested answers award it.
• Error carried forward. A wrong figure early does not zero the rest — subsequent steps are marked against the candidate’s own carried figure, which is precisely how these papers are meant to be evaluated and precisely what key-matching software gets wrong.
• Format and presentation. Whether a statement is drawn up in the required form, whether notes are referenced, whether the answer looks like what the paper asked for.
• Theory and law answers, read for whether the provision, the section and the reasoning are present, with the sentence that earned each mark quoted back.

The honest limits

Standards and law change, and a marking scheme derived from your own question paper reflects what you set, not an external authority’s current position. Where an answer turns on a recent amendment or a matter of professional judgement, it comes back flagged for your faculty rather than marked. Common questions

Can AI check CA Inter and Final answer sheets?

It can mark them against a scheme derived from the paper, and for a coaching institute running mock tests that is the useful case. Two honest limits. ICAI's own marking is not ours to predict, and a CA paper is unusually hard to read structurally — sub-parts, working notes and long numerical formats mean the question breakdown is where errors show up first, well before the marking.

What specifically breaks on a CA paper?

Splitting the paper into questions. On our own trial the extraction disagreed with the true question count by a wide margin in both directions, and a paper split wrongly is marked wrongly no matter how good the marking is. That is a current limitation, not a solved problem, and it is the first thing to check if you try it on your own mock.

Does it stay current with amendments?

Not on its own, and this is the one to be careful about. Tax and law answers turn on the assessment year and the amendments in force, and a marking scheme derived from your own paper and your own expected answers is current only because you are. Review the derived scheme on any question where the law has moved.
