Gradescope is the best-known tool in this category and it is genuinely good at what it was built for. It was built for a university. That is the whole of the difference, and most of whether it will suit you.

What Gradescope is good at
Its distinctive idea is answer grouping: it clusters similar student answers so an instructor grades one representative response and that decision applies across every matching answer. For a first-year university course where four hundred students give substantially the same answer to a structured question, this is a large, real saving, and nothing else in this market does it as well.
It handles scanned paper and digital submissions, and it is long-established, with the institutional trust that comes from that.
Where Indian centres tend to come unstuck
It is licensed to institutions, not bought by a teacher
Paid access is an institutional licence, negotiated, typically in higher education. There is a free basic tier, but the paid path assumes a procurement conversation. A coaching centre owner who wants to try something on next week’s test is not in that conversation, and a single teacher certainly is not.
Grouping needs answers that group
The saving depends on many students answering nearly identically. That holds for a large university cohort on a structured problem set. It holds much less for a batch of forty writing a five-mark CBSE explanation question, where the answers vary and the grouping has less to bite on.
You still set up the rubric
The rubric is yours to define, per question. That is a deliberate strength — it gives an instructor precise control — and it is real work on every paper. Our approach is the opposite trade: the marking scheme is derived from your question paper, you correct it where it is wrong, and you accept slightly less control in exchange for setup that does not deter you from running the second test.
It expects scanning, not phones
The workflow assumes exam scripts get scanned. Plenty of Indian centres have no scanner and do have forty students with phones in their pockets.

When Gradescope is the better answer
Genuinely, and we would rather say so than waste your afternoon:
- You are a university or a large college with an IT team and a procurement process.
- Your cohorts are large and your questions produce near-identical answers — grouping will beat anything we do.
- You want exact, hand-built rubric control and are happy to pay for it in setup time.
- You already have scanning infrastructure and staff who run it.

- You want one teacher to be able to try it on one batch this week, without a committee.
- Your students’ sheets will arrive as phone photographs.
- You want the marking scheme to come from the paper rather than from an afternoon of typing.
